Chester's newest salon opened its doors for the first time today (Thursday 8 May).

Calma Salons, owned by husband and wife duo, Chloe and Jordan Chambers, is based on a concept of good energy and high standards.

This is their second salon, after launching their first in Altrincham last March and now in Boughton.

"I do believe in good karma", Chloe told Chester Nub News.

She added: "If you're a good person, good things happen and I also knew that I wanted the vibe of the salon to be calm.

"So I thought I'm just going to mix the two words together."

When it came to naming the salon, the pair kept coming back to the idea of 'karma'.

The co-owner shared how a poor experience with another salon had shaped this idea.

With her own salon, she wanted to make other customers feel calm and comfortable in their own skin - focusing on creating a space where people can relax, regardless of what the rest of their day looks like.

Chloe acknowledged the difficult economic climate for independent businesses today, stating their previous success in Manchester has encouraged the expansion,

She added: "It is a weird time for small business owners.

"It can be difficult with everything that's going on but you've just got to try your best.

"We now have a team of 11 at our Altrincham salon and it's just absolutely thriving.

"We just thought, let's take the plunge and open another one.

If you don't try you're going to just stay stuck doing the same things.

"We'll make it work; we have done well up to now."

Despite the cost-of-living-crisis and the challenges it presents to businesses such as Calma, Chloe remains optimistic, with people still trying to prioritise self-care.

She added: "When people work really hard every day - especially mums with kids - that is the only time in a week they get, let's say, an hour to themselves.

"I think that, to them, it is worth it and so they will make that work within their income.

"I think people prioritise it because a lot of people are working so hard, they should be able to treat themselves.

"I do just think it's a priority for people."

Given the number of existing salons in the city, Chloe pointed to the salon's emphasis on its high standards and friendly staff.

She said: "A friendly team is our priority.

"Clients know if it's a good atmosphere in a salon because they can be intimidating places to get into.

"I think we've got a really friendly team, and have really high standards.

"Another good thing about the salon is its relaxing environment.

"I think sometimes when you go into some salons, it can be a bit hectic, chaotic.

"That can be a bit daunting for people, but here it's nice and relaxed.

"We try and keep very calm vibes."

At Calma, every customer is offered a drink - such as tea or coffee, upon arrival.

It is details like this, Molly explains, help create the welcoming environment they pride themselves on.
