How interactive exhibits and roaming characters are breathing life into Chester's past

Big Heritage CEO, Dean Paton, recently led a presentation on how to bring heritage alive for young people.
His award-winning social enterprise connects museums, schools, and communities with the past.
West Cheshire Heritage Forum, a group which brings together experts and local history groups, hosted the talk.
Cllr Lisa Denson said: "A big thank you to Dean for his fantastic talk, with so many wonderful examples of how to bring history to life for young people."
An archaeologist by training, Dean is an advocate of people doing their own digs in the local community - even in their back gardens.
He began his talk by explaining what he felt motivates so many people's love of history.

With a strong emphasis on storytelling, Dean explained how Big Heritage has developed interactive attractions that allow people to have fun with the past.
This includes the introduction of a Plague Doctor in Chester, who occasionally roams the city, introducing people to medicine through the ages including a "playground of plagues" at Sick to Death.
At Deva, a series of Roman characters recount what life was like in Chester during the occupation.
West Chesire Heritage Forum meets three or four times a year and is composed of representatives from local history societies across the borough - along with council officers involved in heritage and conservation.
