Cyclists to place memorial white wheel for Lee Stallwood at Hoole Bridge
By Dherran Titherington 5th Jun 2026
Cyclists will stop at Hoole Bridge this weekend to place a memorial white wheel for Lee Stallwood as campaigners renew calls for safety improvements at the bridge.
In the early hours of Thursday 21 May, cyclist Lee Stallwood died following a collision on Hoole Bridge involving a silver Toyota Yaris. The driver fled the scene.
In a tribute, Lee's family described him as a "caring gentle giant", who "would do absolutely anything for anyone".
They added: "Lee was loved by absolutely everyone who met him. His loss is especially tragic for all of us, his family."
The tribute will be placed during Chester Critical Mass on Saturday afternoon (6 June), with organisers also highlighting a petition relaunched in Lee's memory that has attracted almost 4,000 signatures calling for measures to make the bridge safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
Originally launched in 2019 and recently revived at the request of Lee's family, the petition calls for measures including a 20mph speed limit, improved lighting, safer crossings and better protection for pedestrians and cyclists.
Led by Steve Howe, Marko Williams and Adam Dandy, the campaign, which currently has almost 4,000 signatures, says concerns about the safety of Hoole Bridge have been raised for many years, with residents and local representatives previously backing calls for improvements.
It adds that candidates and councillors visited the bridge in 2019 and listened to concerns from residents, but says the safety improvements called for have still not been delivered.
The Saturday afternoon ride will depart Grosvenor Park at around 2pm, with cyclists due to reach Hoole Bridge at approximately 2.20–2.30pm to place the white wheel.
The memorial will include a QR code linking to the petition.
A fundraiser set up by a family friend to support Lee's mother, Judy Stallwood, has raised almost £4,000 from more than 100 donors, with contributions going towards funeral costs and family support.
Cheshire Police continue to appeal for witnesses to the collision on Thursday 21 May. Anyone with any information or footage is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101, or via the website quoting IML 2332883.
