Visitors to Chester Zoo can explore the grounds and its 37,000 animals after hours this summer, with the return of Afterglow.

The event will see the zoo transformed into five lively, themed zones - each packed with entertainment, food and immersive experiences.

Similar to previous sellout years, Afterglow will offer guests the unique chance to encounter some of the world's most endangered species during golden hour, which, for many animals, is one of their most active periods.

In a series of brand-new twists and additions for 2025, staff at the zoo are promising the "ultimate summer evening out," with the event set to be bigger, bolder and better than ever before.

Life-sized prehistoric dinosaur puppets will roam the zoo with full theatrical performances and interactive meet-and-greets throughout each evening.

Other new additions this year include a silent disco, giant inflatables, a Master Lego Builder experience, and an array of roaming performers – including acrobats, jugglers and stilt walkers.

For those who prefer tranquillity and want to take in the natural sounds and sights around them, there will be a self-led wellbeing trail and guided meditation sessions.

The evenings will also feature competitions and giveaways, alongside themed food and drink – including loaded nachos, daiquiris, frozen colas, churro caramel sundaes, cupcakes and hotdogs, freshly prepared and served across the zoo.

All ticket sales will support the zoo's conservation efforts as a registered charity.

"Afterglow is back and this year it's bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before," said Gemma Wright, visitor experience general manager at Chester Zoo.

"From inflatable dinosaurs and puppet parades to cocktails and a silent disco under the evening sky, there's something for absolutely everyone.

"Whether it's kids letting off steam on our fairground rides, couples drifting through the Islands on the Lazy River Boat Trip, or families gathering for a dinosaur show - Afterglow is the ultimate summer evening out.

"Importantly, every ticket supports our vital conservation work – both here in the UK and globally.

"So, while you're enjoying your frozen treats and giant puppet selfies, you're also helping protect some of the world's most threatened species."

In another first for the zoo, the event this year is sponsored by Sudocrem - further boosting the zoo's work to prevent extinction.

All of the zoo's animal habitats, tropical houses, walkthrough aviaries and restaurants will be open during Afterglow.

The unique event will run on exclusive dates between 1 - 17 August 2025, from 3pm until 8pm. Tickets are now on sale, starting at £21 for adults and £14 for children (aged 3–17).

Zoo members go free but must pre-book in advance.
