The Indecent Proposal of Edith Morrey

A historical talk about the murder of George Morrey in Hankelow 1812 and the sensational trial that took place at Chester Castle.

Please note this talk will contain graphic details of murder and subsequent execution. It also deals with themes such as miscarriage and the forced adoption of a child.

The discovery of George Morrey's body at his own home left those around the village of Hankelow in a state of shock in 1812. With money missing from the home and the brutality of his murder, many believed that he was the victim of a burglary gone wrong as he confronted the perpetrators.

Desperately, the villagers wanted to know the truth. Summoning Faithful Thomas, the Coroner of Chester, they hoped that the truth could be uncovered.

The Indecent Proposal of Edith Morrey takes us back to the gruesome events of 1812 and Faithful Thomas's Inquiry at the White Lion Pub in Hankelow, which led to the eventual trial at Chester Castle.

The trial caused a media frenzy that quickly captured the public's imagination, as John Lomas and Edith Morrey faced not only Robert Dallas's court but also the court of public opinion.

This talk is part of the Chester Heritage Festival 2025.
