Make a difference in Chester this summer with Street Angels
By Dherran Titherington 3rd Apr 2026
As Chester heads into warmer months and the upcoming race season, Street Angels are urgently calling for more volunteers to help vulnerable people in the city.
Two years on from launching, the group has quietly supported hundreds of people on weekend nights. Now, its project leader is calling for more volunteers to help run additional shifts, and to help as many people in need as possible.
"With a busy season ahead, we need more volunteers," said Gary Wootten, project leader for Street Angels.
He added: "No shift is the same, and there are always opportunities to make a meaningful difference in people's life."
Street Angels grew out of the need for a reliable support service at night - making sure anyone visiting Chester feels safe, supported, and looked after - explained Paul Fielder, Purple Flag coordinator and city centre manager.
He said: "Street Angels provides support for people feeling vulnerable. They provide support for victims of anti-social behaviour. They provide guidance and reassurance for businesses, and some offer first aid as well."
The local volunteers are on hand to de-escalate situations, have a friendly chat, signpost to helpful organisations or assist someone in getting home at night.
"The first time I went out with the Street Angels, I was blown away by the love and appreciation people in Chester have for them," said Anthony-Lee, Canon Missioner at Chester Cathedral.
"They make a big difference in small ways," he added. "Even though I can only manage one night a month, I've enjoyed seeing another side of the city and meeting some wonderful people.
"I just love being part of their amazing ministry of flip-flops and lollipops!"
Sergeant Jack Bostock of Cheshire Constabulary also praised the volunteers for their dedication.
Thanking the Street Angels for using their own time to make Chester a safer place, he said: "Street Angels makes our life in policing a lot easier.
"They've all been fantastic to work with, and I hope we get more volunteers to carry on the good work you are doing every week."
Since 2023, Street Angels has sent out volunteer teams on Fridays, Saturdays and on race days over 150 times.
To celebrate the project and raise awareness, a short documentary has been produced highlighting its story and impact so far. You can watch it here.
