Chester Zoo has unveiled plans for a new solar farm to generate clean energy and power its operations

The application submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council outlines plans to install nearly 6,000 solar panels on a zoo-owned field south of Wervin Road.

Once fully operational, the proposed solar farm could generate 3.5 MW of electricity, most of which will be used to power the zoo's day-to-day operations.

Although the site lies within the Green Belt, the zoo argues that "very special circumstances" apply due to the environmental benefits of the renewable energy project.

With rooftop solar panels already installed on several buildings, including the Heart of Africa and The Reserve, the zoo explains that high electricity demand means additional generation is needed.

The application said: "The fundamental premise underpinning this proposal is that it will generate a substantial environmental benefit by producing clean, zero-carbon electricity."

With the scheme representing "a clear and purposeful investment in renewable energy infrastructure", the development forms part of the zoo's wider sustainability strategy, complementing existing rooftop solar installations across the estate.

Aiming to further reduce carbon emissions from the zoo's operations, the application also highlights the economic benefits for the local area, such as creating jobs during both construction and its ongoing operation.

The project will be delivered in phases, with an initial smaller connection before the full 3.5 MW system is online, due to local grid capacity.

If approved, construction could begin as early as next year.

The zoo's planning documents stress that the development is reversible, with minimal impact on the land, which could be returned to agricultural use after decommissioning.
