Council launches independent review following fatal Wrexham Road incident
Cheshire West and Chester Council has instructed an independent and comprehensive review of the safety measures close to the Kings School on Wrexham Road.
This follows the death of 11-year-old Evan Rothwell, who was struck outside of the Kings School, Chester, at around 5.12pm on Tuesday 12 November.
Officers and paramedics quickly attended, with Evan being taken to Alder Hey Hospital via air ambulance after initial treatment at the scene.
Despite the best efforts of those involved, Evan passed away at the hospital on Saturday 16 November.
The council's independent review will commence in January, and will include consideration of the speed limit and the suitability of traffic calming measures.
Any recommendations made by the review will be implemented where appropriate, with full regard to all users of the highway.
This is action the council is able to take now, in advance of the conclusion of the Police and Coroner's enquiries.
At the council's request, the housing developer has repaired two street lights.
The time interval between the red vehicle traffic light and pedestrian green man has been increased.
Over the forthcoming weeks, the council will clean the road signs in proximity to the junction and cut back overgrown hedges along the route.
They will also install two new digital signs which will display a school warning sign advising drivers to slow down on Wrexham Road.
A programme of road safety education for all pupils, via the school, will also be provided, alongside signposting residents to the appropriate police reporting channels for moving traffic offences.
Cheshire West and Cheshire Council emphasised the importance of not pre-empting the outcome of the ongoing enquiries.
