Chester's new Metro Bank set to open before June
Work has commenced on the new Metro bank in Chester city centre, having received the green-light last year.
The Foregate Street site is set to open before June this year, with an exact date not yet confirmed.
Chester Metro Bank store manager, Katrina Thelwell, discussed the bank's emphasis on its local identity in the new location.
She said: "We are already working with a range of Chester businesses and are so excited to be able to welcome everyone in store soon.
"Being part of the local community is vital for us and if anyone has any banking queries, please do not hesitate to reach out to me on LinkedIn.
"All our new colleagues will be in post by early March to begin their training ahead of store opening.
"We are delighted that as a community bank we have recruited from the local area."
Local director at Metro Bank, Lisa Wortley, commented that recruitment is 'going well'.
She added: "We have appointed the key store management positions including our local business manager.
"Every business that banks with us is supported by a local business manager who has in depth local knowledge and can support every size of business from entrepreneur start up to established SME.
"I am keen to speak to any business that may be considering switching their banking provider, as we provide a bespoke personal approach to business banking matched with a vast competitive product mix."
The Foregate Street units will be the first new bank in Chester for some time, creating 25 jobs in the area.
Metro Bank had originally received planning permission for external works in 2019, but faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The bank's application said: "Metro Bank are proud to be bucking the trend and opening new stores at a time when other banks are closing.
"It is relevant also to note the wider pressures facing the high street at present and the introduction of a new bank in the heart of Chester's town centre will also assist with town centre first principles and contribute towards the vitality and viability of the city."
The site consists of a three-storey building on the corner of Foregate Street and Frodsham Street.
The ground floor consists of two commercial units, both of which are currently vacant, having most recently been used for H Samuel and Warren James as a jewellers.
The approved application gave permission for the removal of the existing shopfront, installation of new external finishes, such as new glazed windows and an ATM.
Highlighting the benefits to the local area, the report said: "Metro Bank will result in the reoccupation of a longstanding vacant unit currently detracting from the vitality of Chester's Primary Shopping Area (PSA).
"A new store will also create around 25 new full-time jobs, with training opportunities in customer relations and financial services."
