Gordon Hamilton, a retired construction professional, recently moved into The Wyldewoods - an independent retirement community in Chester.

After his wife required full-time dementia care, Gordon found himself alone in a large house. As winter set in, so did the silence.

With loneliness as a major problem across the country for many older people, moving to such communities can help to reignite social lives and build new connections.

"When my wife Hazel needed full-time dementia care and it became clear she wouldn't be returning home, things shifted.

"Suddenly, I was living alone in a large house with a big garden," he said.

"As winter crept in and the days got shorter, shutting the front door for the evening made the house feel even emptier.

"That's when the idea of a community like this started to make real sense.

"My daughters live just a few miles away, so being closer to support and community felt right."

A huge factor for Gordon was being able to maintain an active lifestyle and his independence.

Citing the "excellent" location of the care village, he said: "It's close to the city centre, shops are within easy reach and there's the option of using the park-and-ride if I ever give up driving.

"It was also important for me to be close to my daughters and within a short distance of Hazel's care home.

"Convenience played a big role – shops, local walks, my golf clubs, and the city are all nearby."

The Wyldewoods is part of Retirement Village Group's new Thrive Living collection – independent retirement communities in well-connected locations with great amenities.

He said: "To use a football analogy: Boughton Hall felt like League One, whereas The Wyldewoods is Premier League.

"Gifford Lea was lovely as well, but just too far out. If I ever stop driving, I don't want to feel isolated or rely heavily on others."

With isolation contributing to his decision to move into a retirement community, Gordon emphasised the appeal of wanting to make a fresh start with a new community.

Gordon added: "The opportunity to make a fresh start with a new community is very appealing.

"After living alone in a large home, I'm looking forward to meeting new people, joining in on social events, and enjoying activities that interest me – with the freedom to opt out if I want to."

The comfort of knowing there is support on hand if you need it is also a major factor for peace of mind both for Gordon and his daughters.

"Knowing that if there is a bump in the night, it's nothing to worry about, and there is help and support 24 hours a day is very comforting," he said.

"I still enjoy all the things I used to, but now with a lot more free time. No more worrying about house repairs or garden chores – just a more relaxed lifestyle.

"I love the idea of living in a secure, well-designed home, without the burden of maintaining a large property and garden.

"I plan to spend time with friends, old and new, and enjoy meals or drinks at the bar and restaurant, which really feels like the hub of the community. I'll definitely take part in some of the activities and events on offer too.

"Having guest rooms is a great bonus - I've got two close friends visiting soon and I can't wait. Of course, this lifestyle isn't for everyone – but life is for living.

"For me, being part of a community is essential."

The Wyldewoods in Chester is ready to move into now with options for both renting and purchasing apartments.
