The Lord Mayor of Chester has written to express condolences on behalf of the city following the attack at a German Christmas market on Friday 20 December.

Cllr Razia Daniels wrote to the Mayor of Magdeburg, Simone Borris, following the incident which resulted in the deaths of five people.

At least 200 people were injured.

In the letter she said: "We are saddened by the incident which happened at your traditional Christmas markets, especially whilst friends and families were out enjoying the festive season.

"Here in Chester, we have our own Christmas markets and I can not begin to comprehend what happened.

"As a neighbouring city and a friend, Chester stands with your city in the sad and dark days and months ahead.

"Can we pass on our thanks and gratitude to your emergency services for their swift response and actions.

"Our sincere condolences and thoughts are with the victims' families and those who were injured.  We wish them a full and speedy recovery."
