Chester's Grosvenor Museum will celebrate 140 years since opening this month.

Founded in 1885 to house the collections of the Chester Archaeological Society, the Grosvenor Museum officially opened its doors to the public the following year.

Designed by the Chester architect Thomas Meakin Lockwood, part of the building costs were donated by Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, who also donated a portion of the site in Grosvenor Street. The rest of the costs were met by public appeal.

Today the museum houses collections exploring the history of Chester, its art and silver heritage, and its natural history.

To mark its 140th anniversary, a programme of special activities and online content will take place throughout October, celebrating the museum's rich history and the role it continues to play in the life of the city.

A series of exhibitions, object spotlights, historical photographs and behind-the-scenes content will also be unveiled throughout the month.

As part of the celebrations, local personalities from across the region have recorded special birthday messages which will be posted on the council's social media channels. Those with connections to the museum are encouraged to get involved and share their stories online.

"The Grosvenor Museum has been at the heart of Chester's cultural life for 140 years and has helped generations of people discover the fascinating history of our city and borough," said Councillor Lisa Denson.
