A man has been arrested in connection with a fire on a canal boat in Chester city centre.

At around 5:06 am on Sunday 4 October, two fire engines from Chester were called to a barge well alight along the canal off Frodsham Street. Cheshire Police arrived at around 5.40am.

Firefighters used two breathing apparatus, a hose reel, and a main jet to extinguish the flames. Water supplies were secured using a nearby hydrant and a portable pump.

After putting out the fire, crews secured the barge to the canal towpath to prevent it from drifting.

Police have now confirmed a 60-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson. He remains in custody at this time.
