Chester Heritage Festival to feature notorious 19th Century murder trial

Picturehouse is set to host a talk on a notorious 19th century murder trial - forming part of this year's Chester Heritage Festival.
Following the murder of George Morrey in Hankelow 1812 and the subsequent trial at Chester Castle, the talk is a promotional event for historian Nick Kevern's latest book - 'The Noose of Samuel Burrows: Tales of a 19th Century Hangman and Those he Condemned'.
The discovery of George Morrey's body at his own home left those around the village of Hankelow in a state of shock.
With money missing from the home and the brutality of his murder, many believed that he was the victim of a burglary gone wrong.
Summoning Faithful Thomas, the Coroner of Chester, the villagers hoped the truth could be uncovered.
What followed included a notorious trail and a media frenzy that quickly captured the public's imagination.
Guests can expect to hear about the events leading up to the trail and what followed - on Sunday 8 June at 4pm.
Doors will open at 3:50pm with tickets priced at £6.

The book is published by Pen & Sword and will be released on 30th September 2025. It is available to purchase on pre-order at Amazon, Blackwell's, Foyles, Hatchards and Waterstones.
