Hailed as a 'historic freeze', rail fares in England are to be frozen for the first time in 30 years.
Lasting until March 2027, the freeze until will apply to regulated fares, which includes season tickets and off-peak returns.
Regulated rail fares include season tickets, anytime day, off-peak, and super off-peak tickets. Unregulated fares include first class, advance, anytime and off-peak day tickets – the cost of these fares is set by train companies.
Local MP Samantha Dixon has welcomed the news, which was announced ahead of today's Autumn Budget, stating the move will save commuters hundreds of pounds on some of the busiest routes in the country.
"This historic freeze will give much-needed breathing space for rail travellers across Chester North and Neston," said Samantha Dixon, MP for Chester North and Neston.
"Labour understands the cost pressures working people face. We also understand that the economy only works when it works for everyone, including making sure it's affordable for people to travel to work and get where they need to.
"We all want cheaper rail travel, and I'm pleased that's what we're delivering.
"This freeze will help so many rail users across our local area and beyond and it is all part of the Government's wider plan to rebuild Great British Railways, in public hands."
The government has said freezing rail fares is intended to 'directly limit inflation' by holding down 'a major component of everyday costs'.
During this afternoon's Autumn Budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves also outlined changes to income and property taxes, cash ISAs, benefits, transport and more.
Labour's wider plans for Britain's railways includes establishing a new publicly-owned company, Great British Railways (GBR), that will run and manage the tracks and trains used every day.
