A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "The man also threw a number of drinks at members of staff before fleeing the scene on foot in the direction of Love Street.

"The man was subsequently traced to Souters Lane, close to the River Dee, where he became aggressive and charged at the attending officer and was subsequently sprayed.

"Despite being sprayed, the man ran from the officer and proceeded to jump into the river, swimming over to and boarding a nearby tour boat.

"The man proceeded to throw abuse at officers whilst they attempted to engage with him and made attempts to jump back into the water."

Cheshire Police said: "After a short while, the man eventually came down from the boat and was detained by officers.

"He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, section 47 assault and public order offences."

It said: "A very disappointing start to the day.

"While we were looking forward to our first open top cruises of the year on The Jackie this weekend, she has sadly been vandalised in the early hours of the morning and will need some TLC before she's ready to welcome passengers onboard.

"On the bright side at least it's a nice day for the crew to fish all the life jackets out of the river, and they're drying off nicely in the sun."
