The Chester historian shining a light on Tudor women through podcast
A Chester local and Tudor academic, Jessica Faulkner, has created a podcast on the lives of Tudor women.
She is also part of the team at Live History, Chester, where she leads historical tours and workshops around the city.
The 22-year-old founder started her podcast, 'The Tudor HerSTORY', last November.
Growing up in Chester moulded her passion for history, inspiring her study of the Tudors.
She said: "I've been a Chester girl all my life. It's one of those cities where you're surrounded by so much history, predominantly it's more Roman, but when you're walking around Chester you've got so many eras of history.
"Because we've got such a rich history, it's quite easy to fall into it and start researching more.
"I've been studying history on my own since I was about 14 and I've had an instagram page dedicated to history since about 2018."
As an Anne Boleyn enthusiast and super-fan, Jessica is also studying history at the open university.
Describing her decision to put her passion into podcasting, she said: "It was really meant to be a bit of a side project but it has taken off a little bit so it seems to be becoming a bit more full-time.
"I've always loved Tudor history, I've been obsessed for years.
"I've always been interested in the woman's perspective of history, I think it gets overlooked a lot."
The student had her doubts about the project taking off initially, but reflecting on her first year of HerSTORY, Jessica described the joy of watching it grow and meeting other academics in her field.
She said: "I've loved every minute of it. I've had some quite esteemed historians on it and it has been received really well actually, I've been quite surprised by the response.
"People like that it's just about the women."
When asked about the name behind the podcast, Jessica pointed to the absence of women's voices throughout history.
She explained: "I think history is written by the 'he' and not by the 'she': that's why it's called Herstory.
"Women aren't just a side step in history, we have contributed in so many ways.
"Once you start looking, you realise how much influence women have had."
Jessica told Chester Nub News about her plans for upcoming episodes, with the next one focusing on Margaret Beaufort, the mother of king Henry VII and the matriarch of the Tudor dynasty.
