Chester coffee shop to permanently close as owners cite rising costs
By Dherran Titherington 3rd Jun 2026
A Commonhall Street coffee shop and co-working space will permanently close later this year, with owners citing "increasing pressures and rising costs".
Launched in August 2024, Just Coffee offers specialty coffee alongside hot-desking facilities, venue hire and its sister company, 'Just Content', which specialises in content creation on the top floor.
The venue was previously home to The Arc art gallery, whose closed the business in 2022 after nearly 30 years in the building.
In March 2025, Just Coffee operations manager Nick told Nub News that the business was founded to fill a gap in Chester's co-working market.
At the time, he said: "You could say that there wasn't really a gap in the market because there's lots of coffee shops in Chester. So that's what sort of made the gap in the market, what we saw as the co-working space."
He also stressed the importance of serving high quality coffee and hoped the business would contribute to Chester's growing coffee shop culture.
In a statement released on Tuesday (3 June), the owners announced the "incredibly difficult decision" to close the business, saying they were "absolutely gutted" to share the news.

The statement read: "I'm sure many of you are aware of the challenges facing businesses today. Whilst we don't want to add to the headlines, as a small independent coffee shop, we are not immune to them.
"The increasing pressures and rising costs over the coming months have led us to make this heartbreaking decision."
Reflecting on the business's original vision, the owners added: "When we opened our doors, our vision was to create something that was more than just a coffee shop. We wanted to build a space where people could connect, work, meet, create and feel welcome.
"To every customer, regular visitor, event attendee, business, freelancer and friend who has supported us along the way - thank you. Whether you visited once, worked from our co-working space, attended an event or made us part of your daily routine, your support has meant more than we can put into words."
Confirming the coffee shop will close, the owners expressed plans to remain the the building until December, continuing to operate its co-working space and venue hire services.
The post continued: "If you're looking for somewhere to work, hold meetings, host workshops, networking events or private gatherings over the coming months, we'd love to hear from you. We'd encourage anyone who hasn't yet experienced the space to pop in and make use of it before the year is out.
"Whilst this chapter is coming to a close, we'll always be proud of what Just Coffee became and the community that helped make it possible. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of the journey."
