Come and meet Clare and her landscapes at a private view of her exhibition which is part of the Visual Artists Association OpenSpaces initiative.
Clare Chinnery is a contemporary British artist based on the Wirral. She studied Fine Art Painting at Liverpool John Moores University and works primarily in oils, exploring colour, atmosphere, light and texture through an expressive approach to painting. Clare's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with paintings held in private collections in the UK, USA, China and New Zealand. She has recently been shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2026 and the Visual Artists Association's VAO 2026 Awards in London.
Best known for her expressive floral still-life paintings, Clare has recently expanded her practice to include landscapes inspired by her travels throughout the UK and Europe. Intrigued by the colours, textures and atmosphere of the places she encounters, Clare translates these impressions onto canvas through bold colour, energetic brushwork and layered textures. Combining thick, expressive impasto paint with unexpected bursts of spray paint, Clare's landscapes take on a contemporary, urban edge, bringing together a strong sense of place with a bold, instinctive approach to painting.
As part of the Visual Artists Association's Open Spaces, Clare was delighted to be selected to exhibit her work at books on the walls in Chester. As someone who loves books, music and a good coffee, the space feels like a particularly good fit for her. Clare is often inspired by quotes from books and song lyrics, which often find their way into the titles of her paintings.
'I'm really excited to be showing my work in such a beautiful, carefully curated space that brings people together through literature, music and art. I hope my paintings will encourage visitors to pause, look a little closer and find their own stories within them.'
