Chester Nub News was kindly invited to try Sage at Chester, the latest addition to the city's restaurant scene.

The modern restaurant celebrates seasonal ingredients, with its menus celebrating the best of British produce.

Tucked away within The Wyldewoods, a brand new independent retirement community in Chester, the contemporary restaurant officially opened to the public earlier this month.

I began with some fresh focaccia bread, served with sage butter, olive oil and balsamic for dipping (Nub News)

Attending its dinner service on a Friday night, I began with some fresh focaccia bread, served with sage butter, olive oil and balsamic for dipping. The bread was exceptionally fresh and soft, with a slightly crispy crust.

The confit duck bon bon was next up, served with a seasonal blackberries and apple garnish.

Similar to a fish cake, the crispy bon bon has a wonderfully light duck filling, balanced out with sweet fruit on the side.

I then opted for the star of the show - a slow-braised beef short rib, served alongside buttery mash, kale, celeriac, honey roasted carrot and tender stem broccoli, all covered in a beautifully rich gravy.

The beef was tender and rich, paired wonderfully with creamy mash and roasted vegetables.

Outstanding is the only way to really describe this plate. With an evident attention to detail given to each element of the dish, there is a clear emphasis on seasonal British produce at its best.

Suitably full after the meal, I couldn't go home without trying one of the many interesting dessert options.

Following a lengthy decision between the apricot bread and butter pudding or the sticky toffee, I opted for the latter - a dense and rich pudding, drenched in homemade toffee sauce and served with vanilla ice-cream.

It was a perfect end to superb meal, which could be suitably summarised by exceptionally warm and attentive service.

Sage at Chester boasts beautiful interior design throughout the space, alongside a thoughtfully curated menu.

Also to be noted was the background music playing throughout the evening, which was unobtrusive whilst still creating a warm atmosphere to dine in.

You can visit the restaurant every Wednesday to Sunday, open from 12pm to 4pm most days, with Friday evenings offering dinner from 5.30pm to 10pm.

The cafe is open every day of the week from 9am for teas, coffee and cake.

You can find out more or book your own visit here.
