Lucy Letby supporters threw a party for her 35th birthday at a pub with glasses of prosecco, homemade banners and a giant 'Lucy' cake.

The former nurse spent her birthday behind bars on January 4, after being found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill seven others on the Countess of Chester's neonatal unit.

The meet-up at The Windmill pub on Clapham Common featured six people, understood to have met via Facebook group "Lucy Letby Discussions", a source said.

In the group, people discuss their beliefs that Letby is innocent and should be freed.

Pictures of the event posted on the closed Facebook page show four attendees holding up a homemade banner reading "happy birthday Lucy" and "a blatant miscarriage of justice".

They drank prosecco and made the booking under the name "Lucy" which could be seen on a reserved card on the table.

A friend of a parent whose premature baby daughter was killed by Letby, who saw the posts, said: "There are families who will never get to celebrate their children's birthdays.

"What's next, do we have celebrations for Myra Hindley and Ian Brady?"

One of the attendees, who uses the pseudonym Lulu Tee, 45, a carer from south London, denied it was a birthday party.

She said: "It was just a meetup of people from the groups. 

"We wanted to get together to toast her birthday and speak about the case. The organiser sorted a cake and a few banners to outline that it was a miscarriage of justice. 

"There was a plan to sing happy birthday and record a message for her saying we're thinking of her and feel its unfair she isn't able to celebrate the things she should be celebrating, if she's innocent.

"Meanwhile, the people who are at fault are not in prison."

One of the organisers posted on X ahead of the event.

It said: "Today is Lucy Letby's birthday. Sadly she is in prison for crimes she didn't commit.

"She won't be able to celebrate her birthday & will be without her family & friends.

"Myself and a group of friends will be meeting up to toast her birthday and send her and her family comforting thoughts.

"Hopefully this will be the last birthday she spends in prison."

They shared the photos of the meet up in the "Lucy Letby Discussions" Facebook page.

The accompanying post said: "A lovely afternoon & evening spent thinking of Lucy on her birthday."

Other group members commented words of support such as "Aww, that is so nice" and "how lovely."

A spokesperson for The Windmill pub declined to comment.

'Lulu' added: "I was closely following the trial and I read the discussions on X, as I have twins who were born two months premature, and I felt very emotionally involved. 

"I originally took for granted that everything said about Lucy was true.

"But I saw the people that thought she was innocent had much stronger arguments than the guilty side did.

I even spoke to a professor and legal experts and her barrister about it, and I came to my own conclusion that she was innocent.

"The state of the unit she was on is horrendous and there's deadly bacteria on the unit, and it was understaffed.

"The consultants were hardly ever around, so the babies were left in the care of inexperienced and incompetent junior doctors who make mistakes.

"I believe Lucy was made a scapegoat, and the consultants are were conspiring against her when she was reporting poor care on the unit.

"It's been portrayed through the press that we're a bunch of conspiracy theorists, stay-at-home mums and men who only have interests in Lucy's appearance, but its a huge group of professional people who feel this way."
