Chester nursery wins national award for pioneering care village model

A nursery based within a Chester care village has won a national teaching award for its pioneering intergenerational approach to early years education.
Ready Generations Nursery, based at Belong Chester, was named a Silver Winner in the Early Years Team of the Year category at the Pearson National Teaching Awards.
The award recognises the nursery's unique model, which brings young children and older people together to learn and take part in shared activities.
One of the first settings of its kind in the UK, the nursery is integrated within the Belong care village, where children regularly spend time with residents through activities including reading, singing, arts and crafts, music and walks
The approach aims to benefit both generations, helping children develop communication skills and empathy, while giving older residents opportunities to stay connected with the community.
Ready Generations was among 99 teachers, lecturers, leaders, support staff and education settings across the UK to receive a Silver Award this year. It will now go forward for the chance to receive a Gold Award, which will be announced at a ceremony in London and featured on BBC One's The One Show later this year.
Nursery manager Ruth Sandbach said: "By working so closely with the Belong village team, we have been able to break down age barriers and enrich the lives of our children, families and grand-friends.
"Seeing the joy that shared opportunities bring to everyone involved perfectly encapsulates why we do what we do, and we are honoured that this impact has been recognised by the Pearson National Teaching Awards."
Sir Michael Morpurgo, author, former Children's Laureate, and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, said: "The dedication and impact of those involved in educating young people is truly remarkable.
"Their influence extends well beyond the classroom. Long before children find their voice, their confidence, or their calling, there is usually a teacher who helped them get there, working patiently and persistently, and often without any recognition at all.
"It is a rare and well-deserved moment to celebrate our teachers and say we are grateful."
The Pearson National Teaching Awards celebrate outstanding teachers, leaders, support staff and early years settings across the UK.
Winners were announced on National Thank a Teacher Day and are organised by the Teaching Awards Trust, an educational charity that recognises excellence across the education sector.
