How Cheshire College fosters future sports champions

Students from Cheshire College South & West have are setting examples of what can be achieved through hard work and passion.

18-year-old Lewis Uttley achieved his first black belt and ranked 8th in GB-60kg weight by the end of 2024.

Encouraging others to 'stay consistent and focused on their goals', Lewis said: "Staying at the right weight has been a challenge, but with the support of my family I've kept pushing forward."

Jack Milligan, 16, celebrated victory at the 2024 British Cadet Judo Championships in Coventry.

The student triumphed in the 60kg category with five impressive wins.

He added: "It was a long day, but winning made it all worth it. Never give up, no matter how tough it gets."

The 16-year-old dreams of pursuing a career in judo while attending university.

In addition, athletes like Kelsey Morrey and Sam Stanyer have made their mark in boxing and rugby.

Kelsey, a promising boxer, has already made waves in the sport, winning bronze medals at both the National Development Championships and the North West Regional Women's Winter Box Cup.

Reflecting on her success, Kelsey said: "With only a year of competing, winning these medals made me feel proud of myself.

"It helped me feel confident and showed me that with hard work, you can achieve your goals."

Kelsey's rigorous training schedule includes twice-daily sessions combining boxing, strength training and conditioning.

Looking ahead, she is determined to win the Manchester Box Cup.

In rugby, Sam Stanyer has earned a spot on the Cheshire rugby team and had the opportunity to trial with Sale Sharks.

Despite facing injury setbacks, Sam's perseverance and dedication continue to fuel his success.

"It was incredibly rewarding to see all my hard work pay off.

"The trial with Sale Sharks is one of my favourite memories, and I can't wait to continue progressing."

Sam's current focus is to win both the league and county cups, encouraging fellow athletes to 'never quit when challenges arise'.

The achievements highlight the strength, determination, and resilience of Cheshire College's young students.

Their success is a reflection of their relentless work ethic, the support of their coaches and families and the nurturing environment at Cheshire College, which encourages both personal and academic growth.
