Chester Zoo partnership gives students practical conservation experience
By Dherran Titherington 13th May 2026
Students at Cheshire College are developing practical conservation and employability skills through an ongoing partnership with Chester Zoo.
The initiative supports learners on the college's Learning for Life and Work programme, which is designed for young people aged 16 to 24 with learning difficulties and disabilities.
As part of an Environmental Leadership Course, students from the Ellesmere Port campus visited Red Rocks to explore coastal habitats and learn about native wildlife including natterjack toads, sand lizards and butterflies.
The course contributes towards a Level 2 qualification in Leadership Skills from the Leadership Skills Foundation, combining outdoor learning with the development of key employability skills.
Alongside fieldwork, students have also developed teamwork, planning and problem solving skills through projects including podcast production and the creation of wildlife habitats on campus.
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College said: "Experiences like this are vital in helping our students grow in confidence and independence.
"By working with organisations like Chester Zoo, they are able to apply their learning in real environments, develop essential life and employability skills, and gain a clearer sense of the opportunities available to them in the future."
The visit forms part of the college's wider commitment to inclusive, experience-led learning that prepares students for work.
