This Thursday evening, Books on the Walls will host writer and researcher James Bailey to discuss his new book about Muriel Spark, one of literature's "great shapeshifters".

His latest work, Like a Cat Loves a Bird, is a thrilling new perspective on her remarkable life and career that spanned much of the twentieth century, from her childhood in Edinburgh to her final years in Tuscany.

Bailey, a Doctor of Literature, is the author of Muriel Spark's Early Fiction (2021) and the co-editor of British Women Short Story Writers (2015).

The event runs from 6-7.30pm and you can book your free ticket with books on the walls – [email protected].

Chester Beer Festival - Friday 5 and Sunday 6 June - Chester Town Hall

Following the success of last year's event, Chester Beer Festival returns to the Town Hall this weekend.

Taking place on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 June, the event will feature 36 quality real ales and 12 ciders from local breweries and the best from beyond.

Run by volunteers from the CAMRA West Cheshire branch, all ticket prices include a £10 voucher for drinks a programme and a free glass. CAMRA members entrance is free with tickets purchased in advance.

Swap & Sip Social - Sunday 7 June - Flat Earth Bar, Chester

Flat Earth Bar on Newgate Street will host its first Swap & Sip Social this Sunday afternoon.

Attendees can bring their good quality clothes, shoes and accessories to receive a swap token for each piece. Then they can browse the rails to find new pieces.

Tickets are priced at £5, which includes three swap tokens and 20% off drinks during event time. All profits from ticket sales will go directly to Hope House Children's Hospice.

The event runs from 12pm to 4pm and only items in good condition will be accepted. Find out more and purchase tickets here.

Chester Green Festival arrives in Chester this weekend, bringing talks, workshops, eco stalls, arts, food and family activities to venues across the city.

Opening on Sunday 7 June, the free festival will feature community activities, creative events and information on sustainability projects across Chester and Cheshire.

Visitors can expect a vibrant mix of expert speakers, local makers, sustainability organisations, creative workshops and hands-on activities covering topics including repair and reuse, food, nature, circular living and community resilience.

A major new textile exhibition exploring creation, redemption and revelation is now open at Chester Cathedral (Nub News)
A major new textile exhibition exploring creation, redemption and revelation is now open at Chester Cathedral.

Featuring the work of renowned artist Jacqui Parkinson, the exhibition showcases three large-scale sequences - Threads through Creation, Threads through the Cross and Threads through Revelation.

Created over a period of ten years, the display is considered one of the largest textile artworks ever created by a single artist, combining intricate craftsmanship with biblical storytelling through colour and design.

The free exhibition is open daily during Cathedral opening hours and runs until Sunday 28 June. No booking is required.

Every Sunday, The Deva Tap serves up a "roast and drink for two" offer, where diners can enjoy any two roasts and two selected drinks for just £35.

With the Brook Street pub noted for stocking specialist beers from independent breweries, the offer includes any cask ale or a medium glass of wine.

Guests can choose from a range of roast options, including beef, chicken, gammon, a trio of meats, or a nut roast. Each dish is served with roast potatoes, carrot and swede mash, roast parsnips, seasonal greens, a Yorkshire pudding, chive and onion stuffing, and unlimited gravy.
