Four members of the public have been recognised after helping save a seriously injured child in Chester.

On Monday 20 July, a child was seriously injured as he fell from his bike in the Shrewsbury Way area of Chester, sustaining a deep wound and a suspected arterial bleed.

Two members of the public who witnessed the incident immediately went to his aid. They were joined by a third person who helped provide first aid, while a fourth called 999, remained in contact with the Force Control Centre and kept the child's family updated by phone.

They also flagged down a nearby police patrol.

Police Constables Brockley and Ricardo arrived and joined the group in applying direct pressure to the wound while managing the bleeding and requesting an ambulance.

As concerns grew over the severity of the child's injuries and delays to the ambulance response, Sergeant Bithell and PC Wall, who have advanced trauma training and specialist equipment, were deployed to the scene.

They assessed the child and used a haemostatic agent and tourniquet to control the bleeding.

Within 25 minutes, those at the scene had brought the blood loss under control.

The boy was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery before later being discharged. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The four members of the public and the attending officers have all been nominated for a Chief Constable's Commendation Award, recognising individuals or teams who have gone above and beyond in serving their community.

Inspector Nick Bamber said: "What makes this incident particularly deserving of recognition is that the outcome was not the result of one person's actions, but of a group of individuals who each stepped forward when confronted with a child in desperate need of help.

"Every person involved played a vital role. The members of public who stopped, acted and helped save a life.

"The attending officers demonstrated professionalism, composure and determination under immense pressure, while specialist officers brought the advanced skills needed to stabilise a potentially fatal injury.

"Given the severity of the wound, the significant blood loss and the suspected arterial bleed, it is entirely reasonable to conclude that the combined actions of all those involved were instrumental in preventing a far more serious, and potentially fatal, outcome.

"Their actions represent the very highest standards of public service and I cannot thank them enough."
