Plans to build more than 400 homes in Chester city centre are set to go out to public consultation as part of the next phase of the Northgate regeneration scheme.

The next phase of the Northgate development aims to deliver a new residential community of more than 400 sustainable homes in the city centre, including affordable housing.

Alongside housing, the scheme includes new public spaces and supporting infrastructure, aimed at improving access through the city centre and increasing footfall in the area.

The proposals also involve removing buildings connected to the former Forum site, with the aim of opening up and improving the setting of the Town Hall, which is currently partially obscured.

Designs for the area draw on Chester's historic street layout. Early plans also include a new cultural building on Town Hall Square, which could provide gallery, performance and community space, as well as exhibition areas focused on the city's history.

Residents are now being invited to comment on the proposals at an early stage, before a planning application is submitted.

Marking the first step in delivering a key priority of the Chester One City Plan, the scheme is also due to be presented to investors at a national property conference in Leeds later this month.

ION Developments and Cheshire West and Chester Council are holding drop-in events, giving people the opportunity to view the emerging proposals and share their feedback.

The events will be held over two days at the former Barclays Bank building next to Chester Cathedral from 2pm until 5pm on Monday 11 May, and from 2pm until 7pm on Tuesday 12 May.

Steve Parry, Managing Director ION Developments said: "We're keen to speak to anyone who lives, works in or visits Chester to hear their views on the next phase of regeneration to unlock a long-overlooked part of the city."

Further details of the engagement process and an online feedback form can be found here.

The closing date for comments is 19 June 2026.
