A significant power shift has taken place at Cheshire West and Chester Council following the formation of a new political alliance.

The borough's two Green councillors have joined forces with three ex-Labour independents to form a new group – which will now be the third largest on the council.

The new group, which will be known as the Green and Independent Alliance, said it wants to provide a 'strong, cooperative and community-focused voice' in opposition to the Labour-run administration.

The group consists of:

  • Cllr Chris Copeman (Green Party), Helsby Ward
  • Cllr John Roach (Green Party), Whitby Park Ward
  • Cllr Elizabeth MacGlashan (Independent), Great Boughton Ward
  • Cllr Jimmy Shannon (Independent), Whitby Groves Ward
  • Cllr Gill Watson (Independent) Newton & Hoole Ward
  • Cllrs MacGlashan, Shannon and Watson had all previously been members of the Labour group before quitting to become independents.

The new political makeup of Cheshire West and Chester Council is now:

  • Labour: 35
  • Conservative: 20
  • The Green and Independent Alliance: Five
  • Independent: Two
  • Reform UK: Three
  • Liberal Democrat: One
  • Unaligned independents: One
  • Vacancy: One

Speaking on behalf of the new group, their leader Cllr Elizabeth MacGlashan said "I'm delighted that we are able to take this positive step.

"By working together formally, we can amplify our shared values and hold the administration to account more effectively.

"Residents across our wards repeatedly tell us they want politics that puts people and planet first – this new group will be a clear voice for exactly that agenda.

"There is a real sense of optimism and excitement about our collaboration."

Nick Brown, chair of the Cheshire West and Chester Green Party, added: "The Green Party are seeing significant growth in our membership both nationally and locally, with now close to 900 members across Cheshire West.

"By joining this alliance, we can capitalise on the leverage of a larger group in council to start to push for the changes our residents and members wish to see.

"I would encourage other councillors who share our core values, to reach out to this alliance."

The councillors have confirmed they have formally registered the new group with the council and will now look to secure any associated rights and resources available to the group.
