Chester's Mayor has expressed her "sincere condolences", after dozens of people were hit by a car at Liverpool's Premier League victory parade yesterday evening (26 May).

Just after 6pm, Merseyside Police had received reports of a car colliding with a number of pedestrians on Water Street in Liverpool.

A 53-year-old man from West Derby has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving while unfit through drugs.

A total of 65 casualties has been confirmed, with 50 people treated at hospitals across the region.

Of those, 11 remain in hospital for ongoing treatment and are all in a stable condition.

In the letter written to Councillor Barbara Murray, The Lord Mayor of Chester referred to the "tragic incident", as something which "should have been a joyous occasion".

Cllr Sherin Akhtar added: "I have been deeply saddened by the unfolding news and scenes, especially as children have been injured.

"Chester sends Liverpool, our friend and neighbour, our sincere condolences and best wishes as it comes to terms with what happened."

Citing her own members of the family as enjoying the parade with fellow supporters, along with many other Chester locals, the mayor has extended her "sincere gratitude" to Liverpool's emergency services and partner agencies, "for their swift and ongoing response".

She said: "Special thanks must also go to the police, fire officers and first responders who ran towards the incident to help and who then rallied around afterwards offering help and support to people who needed it.

"The incident must have been terrifying for all the onlookers and by-standers.

"I would also like to extend my thanks to the members of the public who came to the aid of the injured too.

"I hope all those people who have been injured and who are being treated in hospital make a speedy and full recovery."

At the latest Merseyside Police press conference, Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill sought to reassure the public that "significant progress" is being made within the investigation.

She said: "My thoughts are with all those injured in this awful incident, their families and friends, and everyone who has been affected.

"Like us, many of you will still be coming to terms with what was a harrowing end to a day of celebration.

"I want to reassure the public of Merseyside that detectives are making significant progress as we seek to establish the full circumstances that led to this awful incident and bring the person responsible to justice.

"We have arrested a 53-year-old man from West Derby on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving while unfit through drugs.

"He remains in custody where he is being interviewed.

"We have a total of 65 confirmed casualties, many of whom required hospital treatment, and our officers and family liaison officers are providing specialist support to a large number of the victims."
