Chester's Grosvenor Museum will host a special programme of events this month to celebrate its 140th anniversary.

Founded to house the collections of the Chester Archaeological Society, the Grosvenor Museum officially opened its doors to the public in 1886.

Today, the museum houses collections exploring the history of Chester. To mark its 140th anniversary, a programme of special activities will take place throughout October.

Kicking off the celebrations, Chester Archaeological Society will host a conference on Saturday 24 October. On Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October, there will be free Halloween crafts in the museum hub throughout the day.

A Victorian birthday party will then take place on Thursday 29 October in the Roman Chester Gallery, alongside a birthday-themed 'Café Crafts' session.

Later that evening will see the debut of 'Movie Night at the Museum', featuring the classic film The Red Shoes.

Visitors can also enjoy 'Museum Highlights Tours', running from Tuesday 27 October to Friday 30 October, offering an opportunity to discover some of the museum's most fascinating collections.

Many of the events will take place in the newly created Hub, formerly the museum shop. The space has been transformed into a flexible community space and is already home to a range of regular groups, including 'Café Crafts' and a book club.
