Green light for Chester city centre apartments
Plans to convert former university offices into apartments have been approved by council planners.
Now that plans submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council have secured the green light, Temperance Hall on George Street is set to be converted into ten, one-bed and two-bed apartments.
The site was built as a church in the late 19th century and adapted in 2007 to serve the Chester City Mission.
Most recently it was used by Chester University as offices, meeting rooms and accommodation but is now vacant.
Given its prior occupation, it is already equipped with eight shower rooms and over 12 meeting rooms.
Works include minor external alterations, creating Velux window openings at the front and back of the building, along with cycle storage and a waste store.
The property is located in the centre of Chester, with direct access to the bus station and railway station.
The approval was given under the condition that, 'a scheme to control noise from the premises' was submitted and approved in writing by the council.
This condition is to 'prevent an increase in background noise levels and to prevent a loss of amenity to the residential properties'.
The planning and heritage statement said: "The proposal is to provide quality residential units which will provide much needed city centre accommodation.
"The building has beautiful stone and brickwork detailing and the slate roof is very impressive.
"The intention is to retain these external details and carry out internal alterations, meaning the handsome building will remain an asset to George Street and the local area."
