A flooding alert has been put in place for Chester today (January 1) following heavy rain.

The Environment Agency raised the alert for the River Dee late on Tuesday afternoon (December 31).

The alert said: "Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Dee, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around low lying land and roads around the River Dee at Shocklach, Farndon, Handley, Lower Kinnerton, Chester and Puddington.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and monitoring rainfall and river levels.

"Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses."
