Residents across Cheshire West and Chester are being urged to check they're registered to vote ahead of next year's local elections.

With elections taking place in May 2027, the council has launched its annual electoral canvass to ensure voter records are accurate and up to date.

The canvass helps the council identify households where voter details may have changed and encourages anyone who is not registered to sign up before the deadline.

Delyth Curtis, electoral registration officer at Cheshire West and Chester Council said: "The annual canvass is our way of making sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up to date.

"To make sure you don't lose your say at upcoming elections, simply follow the instructions sent to you. If you're not currently registered, your name will not appear in the messages we send."

The council is particularly urging people who have recently moved home to check their registration details.

Research by the Electoral Commission shows recent movers are much less likely to be registered to vote than people who have lived at the same address for many years.

Across Great Britain, around 92% of people who have lived at the same address for 16 years are registered to vote, compared with just 36% of those who have lived at their current address for less than a year.
