American fast-food chain Chick-fil-A is set to open a new restaurant at Chester's Greyhound Retail Park.

A planning application submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council last year outlined proposals to demolish the former Frankie & Benny's unit, most recently occupied by furniture retailer Natuzzi Editions.

The approved plans for a single-storey Chick-fil-A restaurant, located at Unit 23, will include a drive-through lane and a "reconfiguration of the existing car park".

To accommodate the drive-through, the number of parking spaces will be reduced from 34 to 20, including 16 standard bays, two electric vehicle charging spaces and two accessible spaces.

The building, located opposite the retail park's IKEA store, will feature a modern material palette including red brick, dark bronze cladding and timber-effect panels.

Approving the plans, the officer report considered the restaurant's potential impact on nearby schools and residential areas.

It noted that Blacon High School is approximately 1.6km away, around a 30-minute walk, with the surrounding area being predominantly residential. The report concluded that it was unlikely pupils would pass the restaurant on their journeys to and from school.

Citing the site's location within a "large commercial area, set away from residential areas" and its limited accessibility on foot, the planning officer said the proposal would not "significantly or materially increase access to unhealthy food, exacerbate existing health issues, or result in an overconcentration of such uses within the area."

The design of the proposed restaurant was also considered "consistent and proportionate" with other retail units in the wider area.

Whilst the report acknowledged that the proposed colour palette was not typical of the retail park's existing character, it was considered consistent with the appearance of other comparable restaurants nearby.

Founded in 1967 by Samuel Truett Cathy, Chick-fil-A is a US fast-food chain specialising in chicken sandwiches.

The company's values have been shaped by the Christian beliefs of its late founder, who died in 2014. Chick-fil-A restaurants remain closed on Sundays, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day in line with the company's long-standing policy.

The company's website states that its corporate purpose is "to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A".
