A road closure will be in place on Nuns Road, Chester, starting from next week.

The existing paving, alongside the City Walls, has been damaged and lifted due to tree roots, causing a number of trip hazards.

Reusing as much as possible, the council's highways service will relay the old paving, with a full road closure needed for the duration of the works.

Work is planned to begin on Monday 19 January 2026 for a period of approximately 12 weeks, but is weather dependent and could change.

The edge of the tree pits will also be reset with a double row of granite, then the surrounding area will be filled with a resin that will allow the tree roots to move naturally, without damaging the surface.

Considered part of the City Walls and therefore protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the works to the paved area needed approval from Historic England and the council's conservation team.

Subject to a number of conditions laid out by Historic England, a detailed laser scan of this section of the wall has been done to record its current condition. To carry the work out safely, a full road closure will be in place for the duration of the work.

Work will start at the Watergate Street end of the scheme, and will progress south in two phases to the north and south of Grey Friars.

Traffic leaving near the HQ building will be required to turn left onto Nuns Road then to Grosvenor Road.

For a period of the work, Grey Friars will also be closed to through traffic. Pedestrian access will be maintained along Nuns Road throughout the works.

Access to Roomzzzz will be maintained throughout the work from the Watergate Street end of Nuns Road.
