Chester Heritage Festival to feature notorious 19th century murder trial

Picturehouse is set to host a talk on a notorious 19th century murder trial.
Forming part of this year's Chester Heritage Festival, the event will take place this Sunday (8 June).
Following the murder of George Morrey in Hankelow 1812 and the subsequent trial at Chester Castle, the talk is a promotional event for historian Nick Kevern's latest book - 'The Noose of Samuel Burrows: Tales of a 19th Century Hangman and Those he Condemned'.
The discovery of George Morrey's body at his own home left those around the village of Hankelow in a state of shock.
With money missing from the home and the brutality of his murder, many believed that he was the victim of a burglary gone wrong.
Summoning Faithful Thomas, the Coroner of Chester, the villagers hoped the truth could be uncovered.
What followed included a notorious trial and a media frenzy that quickly captured the public's imagination.
Guests can expect to hear about the events leading up to the trial and what followed.
Doors will open at 3:50pm with tickets priced at £6.

The book is published by Pen & Sword and will be released on 30th September 2025. It is available to purchase on pre-order at Amazon, Blackwell's, Foyles, Hatchards and Waterstones.
