Stonework repairs to the city walls have been commended by Chester Civic Trust.

The trust recently presented a 'Good' award to the Highways Service at Cheshire West and Chester Council for its stonework repairs to the Northgate.

Celebrating the Chester Civic Trust's 65th year, the awards recognise the best changes to Chester's property and civic scene.

They also encourage higher standards of design and maintenance in Chester's public realm.

Aiming to recognise small projects which have been carried out to a high standard, the judges thought recent work around the city by the council deserved a special mention.

The judges said: "The stonework repairs to the Northgate have been extremely well done and we hope this sets the standard for work to the city walls in the future."

Dylan Davies, structures team leader at Cheshire West and Chester Council, added: "Chester's city walls have stood the test of time over many centuries, but this section adjacent to Northgate Bridge was in need of new masonry.

"The new stone will blend in with the old over time but shows the level of dedication and craftmanship needed for this type of work.

"We are lucky to have such a talented team of stonemasons working for us."

Sarah Corran, engineer for Cheshire West and Chester Council's Highways Service, said: "The new stone was carefully sourced to make sure it matches as closely as possible the properties of the original.

"Laser scanning technology was used to create a template mapping the shape and curve of each stone to ensure a perfect fit.

"Time on site, and cost and disruption, was minimised by cutting and shaping the stones as much as possible beforehand.

"The stonemasons take great pride in their work and it is good to see their craftsmanship and attention to detail recognised in this way."
