The public can expect increased mobile signal across Chester city centre, with the arrival of new small cell infrastructure.

In late 2024, Cheshire West and Chester Council announced plans for increased mobile capacity and coverage.

It had previously secured an agreement with Ontix for a network of small cells to be installed across the city centre.

The signal improvements involved connecting small cell infrastructure to existing lamp posts, ensuring minimal visual intrusion while significantly improving mobile coverage.

Small cells extend coverage for public mobile networks, especially in high-density areas like Chester.

The first stage of works, completed last spring, included implementing the physical infrastructure that would facilitate the new network of small cells - ahead of the roll out phase over the summer.

Now, the council has confirmed the successful installation of new 4G and 5G infrastructure across Chester city centre - making it easier to find a mobile signal and broadband connection.

An Open Access Agreement was previously secured with Ontix to install a network of small cells across the city centre.

The locations of the small cell infrastructure were chosen to provide maximum capacity, whilst respecting the city's rich architectural heritage.

The first phase of the network will particularly benefit areas previously having poor coverage across the city centre, including Northgate Street, Foregate Street and Eastgate Street with more phased coverage planned for later in the year.

"The proactive approach that Cheshire West and Chester Council has taken to address mobile connectivity challenges is incredibly refreshing," said Richard Williams, director of acquisition at Ontix.

"Chester presents a unique environment where technological innovation must seamlessly integrate with the world-famous heritage of the city.

"This small cell technology allows us to lay the foundation for future mobile networks while maintaining the city's architectural integrity."

The council had previously carried out a survey to establish Chester's digital connectivity issues, working in conjunction with FarrPoint. This work provided the information needed to develop an action programme to enhance the city's mobile infrastructure.

Dr Rob Joyce, director of mobile access engineering at Virgin Media O2, added: "Small cells are an important part of this investment, as they are an effective way of increasing local network bandwidth and play an important role in allowing us to keep up with rising customer demand.

"These new sites in Chester will improve the reliability of our network in the area and provide a better experience for customers."
