Chester Cathedral to show E.T. under Museum of the Moon installation
By Dherran Titherington 25th Feb 2026
A pair of special film screenings will take place beneath Luke Jerram's Museum of the Moon, Chester Cathedral's new six-metre lunar installation.
Having opened on Thursday 12 February, artist Luke Jerram's moon sculpture is complete with a surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones.
Measuring six metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon's surface.
On Saturday 14 March, Chester Cathedral and Picturehouse Chester will collaborate to host two film screenings beneath the sculpture.
For the afternoon viewing, attendees can watch 'Muppets in Space' from 1pm–2.30pm. Later that evening, from 6.30pm–8.30pm, Spielberg's 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' will conclude the day's screenings.
"There are moments when a venue and a film just belong together, and this is one of them," said Chester Picturehouse general manager, Alf McClean.
"Watching E.T. beneath a moon like this, in a space like Chester Cathedral, is going to be something very special indeed. We're incredibly proud to be partnering with the Cathedral and we can't wait to welcome people through the doors."
You can find tickets here. Refreshments will be available for purchase inside the Cathedral.
Anthony Lees-Smith, canon missioner at Chester Cathedral added: "The response to Museum of the Moon has been extraordinary. Thousands of people have already come through our doors and the wonder on their faces never gets old.
"We believe passionately in the power of working with Chester's businesses and cultural community to create experiences that bring people into the city and show them what this place is truly capable of.
"Movies Under the Moon is exactly that kind of collaboration, and we're thrilled to be doing it with Chester Picturehouse."
Alongside the film viewings, a city-wide treasure hunt is also running until Sunday 15 March.
The free Moon Explorer Trail takes participants on a journey through Chester's streets - with a family ticket to Chester Picturehouse up for grabs.
Twelve hidden moons are concealed across Chester city centre, each one holding a secret letter. Collect all 12, unscramble them to reveal the mysterious moon phrase, and submit your answer for a chance to win.
Trail locations include Picturehouse Chester, Visitor Information Centre, Louison, Thingummys, Lucy and Yak, Little Yellow Pig, Sick to Death, Jo Jo Maman Bébé, Pars Kahve, Harriet and Dee, The Flower Cup and Chester Cathedral.
Once completed, email answers to [email protected] or hand in your trail sheet at Chester Cathedral or the Visitor Information Centre.
You can download your trail sheet here, pick one up at Chester Cathedral's main entrance, or the Chester Visitor Information Centre.
