Chester Cathedral unveils purgatory exhibition and symposium

Chester Cathedral is set to host a new exhibition this week, showcasing the concept of purgatory.
'The Purgatory Project Exhibition' seeks to highlight a modern vision of purgatory in contemporary society, through a display of multimedia artworks by local artists.
The exhibition, in collaboration with the University of Chester, will be on show at Chester Cathedral from October 1 to November 9.
As well as the exhibition, a two-day symposium will take place in the cathedral's Chapter House from October 1-2, exploring themes of purgatory as inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy.
It will feature world-renowned experts in their field, a dinner and a panel discussion on the relevance of Dante's 'Purgatorio' in the twenty-first century.
The symposium is ideal for newcomers to Dante and enthusiasts alike.
"This initiative exemplifies the strong partnership between the university and the cathedral - celebrating creativity, scholarship and community engagement," said Bernadine Murray, associate professor at Chester University.
"We would be thrilled if you could join us for this occasion, which promises to be both inspiring and impactful."
The exhibition and symposium have been jointly arranged by Emeritus professor Maggie Jackson and Canon Anthony Lees-Smith, with support from the Chester University's academic staff, technical staff and a graphic design student.
