An award-winning cake shop will open in Chester later this month.

Founded by Colombian-born patisserie chef and founder, Laura Johnson, Abba Cakes is known for its beautifully crafted cakes and desserts.

The store caters to weddings, birthdays, special events and everyday indulgences. It also offers catering services including dessert selection boxes and charcuterie-style grazing tables.

The 31-year-old opened her first location in 2022 on Hoylake's high street - featuring a signature bright pink shop front.

Her next venture, a store on Lower Bridge Street, is set to open in late September, Laura revealed to Chester Nub News - with the decision to open in the city being a dream long in the making.

"I always dreamt about opening a cake shop," the founder told Chester Nub News.

"A lot of people said, oh, that's not going to work. So I opened it anyway.

"I feel like I am at the point that I always dreamed of, when a customer can call me and say, I have this event and I trust you to do whatever you want. It is truly an honor."

For Laura, her first Abba Cakes store is about more than just baking and selling cake, but the community she has built in Hoylake - something she hopes to emulate in Chester.

She added: "It's a small community and I love that, I got to know my customers.

"I love the connection built more than the cake.

"We put a lot of time and thought into the recipe and stuff, but it's what the cake means for people, that's what gets me. A lot of those customers become like family."

Four months ago, work started on the Lower Bridge Street building to transform the space into Abba Cakes.

Unlike the Hoylake store, it will offer indoor seating and hot drinks - with various baking themed items on sale alongside handmade cards.

The menu will also change seasonally, with the autumnal offering available as the shop opens its doors in Chester.

Describing the options for indoor dining, Laura said: "Here, I can have people sitting and can offer Colombian coffee. You can sit inside and order a piece of cake or cookie alongside some Colombian coffee."

Upon her first trip to Chester, Laura knew she would open a business in the city one day.

She said: "I said if I ever had a cake shop, this would be the perfect place, it's so beautiful. I like how people perceive independent businesses here. I love how people tend to appreciate the effort put into things.

"I do dream of being the cake shop in Chester. Hopefully, I get close to people's hearts here."
