'Women aren't just a side step in history' - how one local podcaster is redefining Tudor history

A Chester local and academic is the voice behind a podcast based on the lives of Tudor women.
Jessica Faulkner first launched 'The Tudor HerSTORY' in 2023, influenced by a love of the past, having grown up surrounded by Chester's rich history.
The 23-year-old founder is also part of the team at Live History, where she leads historical tours and workshops around the city.
"I've been a Chester girl all my life," Jessica told Chester Nub News.
"It's one of those cities where you're surrounded by so much history, predominantly it's more Roman, but when you're walking around Chester you've got so many eras of history.
"It's quite easy to fall into it and start researching more."
As a Tudor historian and Anne Boleyn enthusiast, she has independently studied the period for almost ten years.

When asked about the name behind the podcast, Jessica pointed to the absence of women's voices throughout history.
"I've always been interested in the woman's perspective of history, I think it gets overlooked a lot," she said.
"I think history is written by the 'he' and not by the 'she'. That's why it's called 'Herstory'.
"Women aren't just a side step in history, we have contributed in so many ways. Once you start looking, you realise how much influence women have had."
Following the launch of the podcast in November 2023, the Open University student revealed how the response has surprised her.
What initially began as a side project, has presented various opportunities to interview "esteemed historians" and those who have influenced her own studies.
She added: "I've loved every minute of it.
"It has been received really well actually; I've been quite surprised by the response. People like that it's just about the women."
