The Sheriff of Chester, Cllr Alex Tate, recently celebrated International Women's Day at St Martin's Academy in Hoole.

Delivering a moving address, she reflected on her own journey into public service and the importance of local activism in creating lasting change for women and girls.

Her message was clear: small, meaningful actions within our local communities can contribute to big, global progress.

Lynn Perry, CEO of Barnardos, also delivered a keynote speech.

She shared her journey, reminding guests that accelerating action starts with supporting and empowering the most vulnerable children and young people to thrive.

The academy opened its doors to families, students from Rudheath Senior Academy and special guests, for a memorable afternoon filled with inspiring speeches, powerful performances and a collective commitment to gender equality.

Throughout the afternoon, guests were treated to afternoon tea, while students took to the stage using song and poetry to express their hopes, dreams and reflections on gender equality.

Highlights included a recital of 'She is the Future' by Bella Thompson, Head Girl of Rudheath Senior Academy.

There was also a group performance of 'This is Me', reinforcing the importance of self-confidence, individuality, and pride in one's identity.

Joining the performances were thought-provoking poetry pieces, such as 'Be the Change' and 'A Girl Like Me', which reflected on the power of young voices in shaping a more equal world.

As the event closed, there was plenty of food left over, which NWAT CEO, Steve Docking OBE, personally delivered to Chester fire station's red watch.

Appreciating the gesture, crew manager, Clare Page, said: "Thank you so very much for dropping off such lovely leftovers from the buffet yesterday; it was really kind of you.

"I'm pleased to report that I was on duty last night and my watch and I had a big drill, after which we sat down with a brew and devoured everything.

"Red Watch Chester sends our thanks."

The event was sponsored by North West Academies Trust (NWAT) which manages the school along with 11 others across Cheshire & Shropshire.
