Roman soldiers will take to the streets of Chester next week as part of a free ticket giveaway promoting Roman Day at Chester Racecourse.

On Tuesday 26 May, a soldier will tour the city centre handing out golden tickets to 20 locals, each offering free entry to the Tattersall enclosure for the annual themed race day on Saturday 30 May.

The promotion forms part of the build up to Roman Day, one of the racecourse's most popular family fixtures, combining horse racing with entertainment inspired by Chester's Roman heritage.

As well as giving away tickets, the soldier will encourage members of the public to post selfies on Instagram tagging Chester Races for the chance to win four tickets to the County Concourse enclosure.

The soldier is expected to march through the city centre and stop at The Cross during the giveaway.

Alongside the racing, families attending Roman Day can expect Roman stunt shows, gladiator boot camps, themed crafts, interactive outdoor learning activities and Roman artefacts in partnership with Chester Heritage Festival.

All activities are free of charge and children under 17 can attend family fun days for free.

Tattersall guests will also have access to the Paddock, Parade Ring and Pavilion lawn, offering close-up views of the racing and race day atmosphere.

Steve Davies, chief operating officer at Chester Race Company, said: "Roman Day is a hugely exciting date in the calendar for us. The spectacle of the Roman-themed activities really brings an added buzz to the atmosphere on a race day.

"This year we wanted to bring some of that atmosphere out into the city ahead of race day itself. Chester's Roman heritage is such a huge part of the city's identity, so people should keep an eye out this Tuesday because spotting one of our Roman soldiers could earn them free tickets to the races. Good luck!"

Competition winners will be announced on Thursday 28 May.
