A Chester school recently welcomed two esteemed guests for a special worship service.

Reverend Sarah Batchelor and the Lord Mayor of Chester, councillor Sherin Akhtar, joined the staff and pupils at Grosvenor Park Church of England Academy earlier this week.

Newly appointed as rector of St John's Church, Reverend Sarah officially joined the parish in September, bringing a rich background of experience that informs her ministry.

She was ordained Deacon in 2022 and Priest in 2023, following a 17-year career as a veterinary surgeon.

During the special worship, the school's mini choir gave a beautiful performance, and pupils proudly spoke about the school's Christian values.

Following the service, guests enjoyed a tour of the city-centre school and afternoon tea, with cakes made by the pupils themselves.

"What an enjoyable morning I had with you all; such warmth and community spirit," said Cllr Akhtar.

"The headteacher, staff and children were all so welcoming. The choir sang beautifully and the children spoke so confidently about their Christian values.

"It was also wonderful to meet the new Rector from St John's — the first female Rector to be appointed at this historic church."

Headteacher Mrs Karen Rodgers added: "As a Church of England academy, our relationship with St John's is a very special one and it was lovely to celebrate this new chapter together.

"Our children were so proud to showcase their school and to share our values of friendship, compassion and respect."
