An 82-year-old Chester resident has won a local Christmas card competition at her home, Belong care village.

Featuring a hand-painted robin redbreast, the design is a traditional symbol associated with Yuletide good wishes.

The card was inspired by the artist's love for painting birds using watercolours.

It has been delivered to residents and apartment tenants residing at the City Road village, as well as Belong's sister sites across Cheshire and the North West, whose customers were all invited to take part in the annual contest.

The artist first realised her talent during retirement, when she found herself with the time, motivation and patience to explore a new passion.

It was after taking drawing classes that Laurie fell in love with watercolours, birds and flowers.

Since moving into one of Belong Chester's 24-hour residential care households earlier this year, Laurie has been supported to continue her pastime and even share it with others.

Along with her daughter, Cath, she has volunteered to lead art classes for her young friends at The Nursery in Belong, the children's nursery integrated within the care village.

Speaking on her mother's behalf, Cath Walsh said: "The whole family is excited to see Mum's artwork in print for the Belong Christmas card.

"Mum is full of joy for her work to be acknowledged in this way and being a part of the competition has given her an even stronger sense of belonging within the community.

"It's given rise to many spontaneous conversations and as a sociable person, this acknowledgement holds great significance for her."

Caroline Ray, general manager at Belong Chester, added: "We're pleased that our seasonal card competition has proven fruitful in encouraging our customers to showcase their creative flair.

"There were many entries and after a tough decision, congratulations go to Laurie for her stunning submission.

"Whilst the sending of cards is a tradition perhaps less observed in this age, our customers tell us how important it is for them and we're happy to continue to promote this for the benefit of everyone."
