Heritage Open Days - Until Sunday 20 September

Chester's Heritage Open Days returns this weekend with a range of free events, tours, talks and hands-on experiences across the city.

The Grosvenor Museum will host Paul Hyde for a talk on key aspects of Chester's long history on Thursday 17 September. He will cover two millennia in one hour, identifying a selection of places and features that help to highlight Chester's rich heritage.

On Sunday 20 September, Chester's 14th century Water Tower will open for visitors. Accessed from Bonewaldesthorne's Tower, it once stood in the River Dee and housed the port authorities monitoring shipping and collecting import duties.

Games night - Books on the Walls - Thursday 17 September

Books on the Walls will host a "cosy games night" this Thursday evening.

The monthly event runs from 6pm to 7.30pm and includes pizza and drinks.

Guests can choose from a selection of board and tabletop games at the venue, or bring along a favourite game from home.

Inspired by the Middle East, France and Italy, the event will feature Bread Together vegan specials, including handmade, slow-fermented pizza slices with a variety of toppings.

Live music - St Mary's Creative Space - Friday 18 September 

Mary's Creative Space will host an evening of live music on Friday 18 September, featuring Liverpool-based duo Samantha Shields and Daniel Ryan.

Combining roots and electric folk with Laurel Canyon influences, their performance will feature original material and a selection of covers.

A description for the event reads: "They have also performed acclaimed tribute shows to iconic albums including Carole King's 'Tapestry', Fairport Convention's 'Liege & Lief' and Neil Young's 'After the 'Goldrush'.

"Playing to sold-out concerts, and with plaudits from their audiences and media alike, have ensured them a loyal following in their hometown of Liverpool and beyond."

They will be joined by Mondegreen, a Widnes-based girlband performing guitar-driven indie-pop with three-part harmonies.

Oktoberfest - The Deva Tap

Oktoberfest returns to The Deva Tap this weekend. Kicking off on Friday 18 September, the pub will once again feature a special Bavarian menu alongside a selection of Bavarian beers.

Four traditional Bavarian beers will be available, with pints and steins on offer, alongside Kölsch-style cask ales from Titanic Brewery.

The special Bavarian menu includes traditional bratwurst sausage, pork schnitzel, currywurst and a frikadellen burger, among other dishes.

A range of offers on schnapps and Jägerbombs will also be available throughout the celebrations.

Oktoberfest will take place at The Deva Tap every Thursday to Saturday until 4 October.

Cheshire's prehistoric past exhibition - Grosvenor Museum

Cheshire's ancient past is being brought to life in a new exhibition at Chester's Grosvenor Museum.

Running until Sunday 20 September, the exhibition explores the region's geological history, from prehistoric jungles and deep oceans to the landscapes we know today.

Visitors can discover fossils from the museum's collection, including Carboniferous plant remains from Wrexham, marine microfossils from Saltney and reptile footprints found on the Wirral.

Entry is free, with donations welcome.
