New Kings Moat primary school on track for September opening
By Dherran Titherington 27th Apr 2026
A new primary school at the centre of Chester's Kings Moat Garden Village is set to open in September, with building work now close to completion.
Local MP Aphra Brandreth recently joined representatives from Sandstone Trust, Cheshire West and Chester Council, and Wynne Construction for a tour of the almost-finished Kings Moat Community Primary School.
The visit gave an early look inside the building, which is due to open to pupils later this year.
Being built within the Kings Moat Garden Village development, the school will eventually include around 1,300 homes on the southern edge of Chester. It will sit alongside new playing fields, 3G pitches and a public park.
The project is being delivered by Wynne Construction on behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Council and will be run by Sandstone Trust, which already operates four schools locally.
It is being delivered in two phases. The first will provide a 1 Form Entry (210-pupil) school, including shared facilities such as a hall, kitchen and dining areas, designed to allow later expansion to 1.5 Form Entry (315 pupils).
Kings Moat Community Primary School will initially open in September 2026 with places for Reception and Key Stage 1 pupils.
Its Published Admission Number will be capped at launch and increase in line with demand as the surrounding housing development grows. A nursery provision will also open with 13 places, expanding over time.
Construction began in March 2025 and is now close to completion, with the main structure finished and internal work continuing.
Outdoor areas, including sports pitches, are also being prepared ahead of opening.
"This project is a clear example of our ongoing investment in high-quality education and the infrastructure needed to support Cheshire's growing communities," said Cllr Adam Langan.
"Kings Moat will provide modern facilities for children to learn and thrive, right at the centre of the new Garden Village development.
"It's fantastic to see the progress and the positive partnership that has delivered it."
Ruth Cadwallader, headteacher of Kings Moat Community Primary School, said: "Every stage of the build brings us closer to opening our doors and welcoming our first pupils, which is incredibly exciting. Kings Moat will be a warm, inclusive, and forward-thinking school where children can thrive.
"We're delighted to have appointed a fantastic team of teaching staff, and I'm really looking forward to introducing them to the community over the coming months."
