Trains to and from Chester are facing severe disruptions today.

This comes after a car crashed on to the train tracks in Salford in the early hours of this morning (Friday 7 February).

National Rail has confirmed severe disruptions on services between Chester to Leeds and Chester to Manchester Victoria, stating both the track and overhead cables have suffered 'significant damage'.

The main railway line linking Manchester and Liverpool is set to be closed for much of the day following the crash.

This affects the Chat Moss Line, which connects Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly.

Greater Manchester Police has now confirmed the driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The driver has been taken to hospital with injuries that are understood to be 'serious but not life threatening'.

Severe disruptions are expected throughout much of the day across northern England and north Wales.

National Rail has organised rail replacement buses. Details of which can be found on their website.

It said: "Customers at Chester who require Manchester Victoria can travel via Stockport or alternatively travel on Transport for Wales services between Chester and Newton-le-Willows, where a bus service will operate towards Manchester Victoria.

"Customers at Manchester Piccadilly who require Chester can travel via Stockport or alternatively, travel to Manchester Victoria, where a replacement bus service is operating to Newton-le-Willows and travel on the next available Transport for Wales service to Chester."
