An investigation has been launched after a fire broke out inside a disused hotel on City Road this evening (8 June).

Crews attended The Belgrave Hotel at 5.37pm, with four fire engines sent from Chester, Powey Lane, Malpas and Ellesmere Port.

All people have now been accounted for, following a search of the premises.

Two teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were sent inside the building to tackle the fire on the first and second floors.

City Road was closed off in both directions at 6.20pm, whilst crews tackled the fire.

The fire was extinguished at 7pm.

Relief crews attended the scene to damp down the building, leaving just before midnight.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
